4 Things I've Learned About Weight Loss in my 40's.

Guess what? I am down thirteen pounds and better than that, my clothes fit and feel a whole lot better!

Probably the best part is I feel in control. Does that make sense? My weight is going down and I am making steady progress. After trying a huge variety (over 100 choices), I have found my favorite Jenny Craig foods. Some I am going to miss terribly when I’m done (Mesquite Chicken and Fettucine Alfredo and Molten Lava Cake to name a few).

I am enjoying the weekly consultations with my Jenny Craig consultant who encourages and cheers me on…and to be honest? Knowing I will be held accountable is very helpful.

As I mentioned before, I have adenomyosis and take progesterone. I have gained weight and had a terrible time losing it since I began the medication. My doctor said it is because the progesterone makes my body think it’s pregnant. The weight gain is my body’s way of storing up for the baby. The imaginary baby that I’m not actually pregnant with.


My weight has been stubbornly sticking the last few years but I am happy to say I have learned a few things about weight loss in my 40’s.

1. Drinking enough water (but not too much) is important.

A few years ago, in an attempt to improve my health, I began drinking the recommended eight glasses of water per day. I also began urinating so frequently I could barely leave the house. Seriously, it was every ten minutes and it was ruining my life. I discussed it with my naturopath who said, “you’re probably drinking too much water“. And that seemed completely reasonable. I cut back on my water consumption, and suddenly, I could leave the house again.

Well, I’ve noticed something with Jenny Craig….I am losing more weight when I consistently drink the right amount of water. I am of the opinion this varies from person to person. I drink two 20 ounce water bottles and then any coffee, tea or water at mealtimes. For me, this is the right amount of water.

When I drink less, I lose less.

2. Portion control is key.

I am not a big eater. No one would accuse me of overeating. But you know what? The Jenny Craig entrees have been eye-opening to me because they are small. With each meal, we are supposed to add veggies (which is great) but it has drawn my attention to the fact that my chosen portions are definitely bigger than I should be eating.

3. I snack too much.

I don’t consider myself a perpetual snacker.


Before Jenny Craig, I rarely ate after dinner (now I save my dessert for after Apollo is in bed…my sweet reward)…The snacking I was doing was a bite or two here while cooking…finishing off Apollo’s meals as I did the dishes. And, um, cream in my coffee….those little things add up. Since starting Jenny Craig, I only eat what my meal plan tells me to.

And it is working.

4. I like rules

This is weird…really.

I have not historically liked rules (just ask my mom). But taking the guesswork of eating for me has been key to my success. For me, it has been really easy to say, “okay, I am going to follow the plan and eat nothing more and nothing less“.

Exceptions are okay, as long as they do not become the rule.

My very first day of Jenny Craig my mom invited me out to lunch. My mom and I hadn’t had lunch together in nearly a year. I determined in that moment not to become so obsessed with weight loss that it came before family and relationships. I went to lunch with my mom, chose a small entrée, and hopped right back on my meal plan. My consultant has been great about helping me navigate these situations.

So there you have it. Seven weeks in and I am feeling great!

  1. Well, this is where having OCD comes in handy. I would NEVER EVER eat anything my kid’s left on their plates. LOL
