A Whole Lotta Sewing Going On…

There's something about this time of year that makes me want to pull out the sewing machine. I don't know if it's the longer daylight hours or the promise of spring, but it seems to creep up each year (you know, each year since like two years ago when I mastered the art of threading-my-sewing-machine).

Our six girls all share one room with one closet. This means that space is a premium…and things were once again getting out of hand. So I came up with the idea for the girls to each sew a drawstring bag to sort their delicate items.

This first entailed a trip to the fabric store, which they loved. Each girl (except Avi, she stayed at home with dad) selected their materials. Then home for sewing.

This was Jubilee's first sewing machine project, and she was thrilled.

Kalina asks almost every day if she can sew. And almost everyday the answer is no. After breaking a sewing machine needle off in my finger last year, I am much more leery of letting the girls use the machine. But use they did, and without incident.

I especially liked how Tilly's turned out. She used two different fabrics and a coordinated ribbon.

One of the things I love about homeschooling is that my children are home all day and have the chance to learn these fun skills. I have also been working on a fun sewing project, but can't show you pictures until I complete part two…

Such a cute and practical project. I love it and may borrow the idea. My girls would love this!

Love the bags! My daughter made similar ones for what I call junk… I put 3 hooks low on her closet wall and she can have 3 bags on the 3 hooks with things I DO NOT consider items of quality. These are the types of things that are junk but then I am a getting rid of excess kind of person!
I am sorry you put a needle through your finger! That had to have been terribly uncomfortable… My daughter has yet to injure herself on sewing machines/sergers nor my son, however my daughter wrapped half of her hair IN a drill bit once which we had to cut out…Lesson learned? PONYTAIL before power tools.

Jubilee and Kalina did wonderfully for a first time, and Tilly’s is beautiful.

Love the panda fabric, very cute.
Also, now that you have Opus on the way, will you call your blog A Bakers Dozen plus One? Just wondering,
    Cheers – Joolz

I love the bags. I forgot that that was the first thing that I made when I learned to sew a few years ago. That gives me great inspiration to pull out my sewing machine for my 9 yr. old son and 7 yr. old daughter.

Very cute projects. I have 4 girls (#5 to arrive any day now) and they all share one room. Maybe I’ll have to come up with a project like this for them. Thanks for the inspiration.
