All in a Day: Bedtime Routine

posted in: Large Family | 5

 Ah, bedtime. I love it (mine and my kids). So what does our bedtime routine look like? It’s actually fairly simple and straight forward. Somewhere around 7 o’clock we have the kids start getting ready for bed…this means:

* Go to the bathroom

* Pajamas on

* Teeth brushed and flossed

{You might just be a chronic blogger/photographer if your little boys can’t stand the thought of “missing out” on flossing photos…}

* Bed ready (blankets found, books prepared, etc)

* Everyone is to be in the living room ready for bed by 7:45.

By this time the little kids have cleaned up the living room (since the mess is mostly their stuff)

Now it’s time to read aloud! I’ve gotten smart and began buying our “read alouds” on my Kindle so the book is never missing and I never have to worry about losing our place.

8 PM everyone is in bed. The big kids read or listen to iPods, the little ones look at books for a half an hour or so, and Chuck and I get some alone time.

And they all lived happily ever after…

  1. 8PM? Even for the older children? I must admit that I would have expected different bed times for different age groups.

  2. Flossing? Really?! It’s a good day here when my kids actually brush their teeth and don’t just wet the toothbrush. I’m impressed.

  3. We have 3 little boys that all sleep in the same room and chat, chat chat the night away. I’m curious if your kids do this. By 10 o’clock we are still telling them to be quiet and go to sleep. Any advice? Consequences to implement?

  4. This is such a smart plan. I think I may just adopt this big family advice for my little family (2 littles).
    Oh and I seriously enjoyed Avi’s flossing method!
