PNW Homeschool Adventures: Exploring the Outdoors
Outdoor Adventures to Combat Anxiety
This homeschooling year isn’t turning how I expected at all. I thought Apollo would love only attending school two days per week (especially since he often wanted to stay home last year) but instead, he is scared of the empty house. This means we have been going on many outdoor adventures. It has also meant I have been meeting up with some awesome mom friends as we get our second graders together for adventures and learning.
Our weather has been beautiful this fall. Sunny days wedged cozily between chilly, gray days of rain. It is the perfect transition between the care-free days of summer and hard-working days of school.
Apollo and Indi met in kindergarten and have been buddies ever since.
This lake is only about two miles from us, but in 15 years we have lived here we have never ventured down to it. While it is geographically close it is not exactly easy to access from our place. Thankfully it is easy to access from our friends’ home.
Free Exploration is Great for Learning
Two weeks ago we spent an afternoon exploring the lake. Indi’s mom brought little nets so the kids could see what lives in the murky water. She also had a laminated page of common plants and animals so the kids could identify the creatures the found. Kym is great at teaching the kids to always be respectful of the plants and animals and how to treat then gently.
So, while this year’s school doesn’t look at all like I expected it to, the reality is so much better.by
